Power Pipeline 08 Enjoys Memorable Weekend

A blast of frigid air couldn't chill the spirits of the Power Pipeline Class of 08. Forty-three women from throughout Texas, Ohio, Maryland and Nice, France, enjoyed a power packed weekend with outstanding speakers and knowledgeable mentors. Famed facilitator Pam Owens (PP98) led the group throughout the weekend, and was joined by presenters Audrey Selden (LT92 and FWR Vice-president and Secretary) who shared wonderful stories about her leadership development (ask her about the three Ps); Sarita Null (LT07) who shared information on financial management; Author Lillie Brock, who spoke on Making the Pieces Fit..Connecting the Personal and Professional with Purpose;" Patricia Diaz Dennis (LT92 and FWR Board Member) who shared the Cowgirls Leadership Principles; Hattie Hill (LT98), who spoke on "What I Know For Sure."

FWR President Penny Beaumont and CEO Candace O'Keefe Mathis shared information about the Foundation and encouraged the class to stay connected. A highlight of the weekend was a visit to The Women's Museum and a greeting from Executive Director Wanda Brice (LT06). Mentors included the aforementioned Selden, Diaz Dennis, Beaumont, Null, O'Keefe Mathis as well as Darlene Owens (Dell, Inc.) and Clemetine Clark (LT98). Members of the PP COB including Jennifer Langston (PP08) and Susan Skinner (PP05) also attended. To view photos from the PP weekend, click here Power Pipeline Page One. FWR Board Elects New Members

At its recent board meeting held at the Omni Mandalay in conjunction with the FWR Annual Meeting, two new board members were elected. Patricia Diaz Dennis (LT92), senior vice-president and general counsel at AT&T, and Lana Porter, president of L&M Enterprises, will join the board. The entire board list can be found at Committees, under the title of FWR Board of Directors.

FWR Honors Sandy Tyler (LT90) With Coveted Cathy Award

Cathy Bonner, namesake of the Cathy Award, presented this treasured award posthumously to Sandy Tyler (LT90) at the annual meeting of the Foundation, Friday, October 10. Sandy was honored for her dedication to Leadership Texas and the Foundation. On hand to

accept the award was her dear friend, Cindy Conroy (LT07), regional director of the El Paso Region.

As a participant in Leadership Texas, Sandy found a venue that suited her well. With state-wide contacts, she enabled numerous other women and girls to achieve their goals. When the Women’s Museum was founded, Sandy was quick to donate both her time and money. She helped organize and fund the publication of the book “Desert Echo, Women Illuminate the Sacred,” with proceeds benefitting the Museum. Perhaps her greatest contributions were to the Girl Scouts of the Rio Grande since Sandy identified the lack of Girl Scout troops from the low-income areas of El Paso. As a result, El Paso now enjoys troops representing the fabric of the community. Her indomitable spirit was present as she raised funds to establish the Girls Go Tech Van, a mobile computer lab that travels to low-income girls to get them on computers with a focus on math and science.

Sandy’s civic involvement included leadership roles in the United Way Campaign, the YWCA, El Paso Chamber of Commerce and the University of Texas at El Paso. In 1990, Sandy received the City of El Paso Conquistador Award for service to the El Paso Community. She also served as Leadership Texas El Paso Regional Director for several years. Sandy’s commitment to the Foundation for Women’s Resources and The Women’s Museum were again demonstrated with significant bequests that will further the mission of each.

The Next Big Thing Was a "Big Thing" for Participants

What should women's leadership development programs look like in the future? What needs should they meet? How should they be designed? These and many other relevant questions were posed to a gathering of more than 100 women on October 11 at the Omni Mandalay Hotel in Las Colinas. The Foundation for Women's Resources (FWR) was the host  for the Dallas event that also brought together women from The National African-American Women’s Leadership Institute, Inc., The National Hispana Leadership Institute, The Center for Asian Pacific American Women, Leadership California, Leadership Illinois and The Foundation for Women’s Resources. Leadership American and its parent organization The Women's Museum: An Institute for the Future were the coordinating organizations for the National Women's Survey.

FWR CEO Candace O'Keefe participated as a member of a panel featuring Rosemary Abriam of the Center for Asian Pacific American Women, Arlivia Gamble of the National African-American Women's Leadership Institute, and Cristina Lopez, president of the National Hispana Leadership Institute. They discussed the importance of diversity in women's leadership programs, as well as the necessity for collaboration. They also addressed today's most pressing questions regarding the changing face of women's leadership to assure the continued success of women in the 21st century.

Hattie Hill (LT98) and Bobbi Bilnoski (LT08), who has facilitated synthesis at LT08 sessions, led the morning-long exercise that was characterized by involvement, discussion, and input. This was the last of six sessions that have been conducted around the nation.

The 2008 National Women Leaders Summit Series was made possible by the support and collaboration with these leading organizations:
